Are Diamonds Traceable?

Whether you’re looking to buy an engagement ring or a piece of diamond jewellery, it’s becoming more and more important to ensure that it’s sourced responsibly and traceable to its country – or mine – of origin. But how do you make sure you know where your diamond comes from? Here's what you need to know, according to our jewellery writer Rosalyn Gomersall.

If you’re looking to build a jewellery box with a conscience, investing in traceable diamonds is your first step. That’s why our new and exclusive Origin by Ernest Jones, ARCTIC LIGHT and Leonardo Da Vinci Cut diamonds collections all offer diamond traceability. Ahead, our jewellery writer Rosalyn Gomersall guides you through what traceable diamonds are and the reasons why blockchain technology is being used to document a diamond’s journey from mine to finger.

What is a traceable diamond?

Celebrated for generations thanks to their beauty, brilliance and resilience, it’s easy to see why diamonds are undoubtedly the most popular gemstone of them all. So why does it matter if a diamond is traceable? It all comes down to sustainability, authenticity and knowing that your diamond has been mined responsibly.

Why is diamond traceability important?

Here at Ernest Jones, we understand the importance of responsible sourcing within the diamond industry. As a founding and certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, we’re known for leading the way in trust and transparency.

All diamonds at Ernest Jones are responsibly sourced and conflict-free in line with the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), which aims to stop illegally traded “blood diamonds” that fund conflict in war-torn areas from entering the supply chain. Our exclusive traceable diamond collections take it even further, giving you complete peace of mind in your diamond's provenance.

Through blockchain technology, you can see your diamond’s journey from its place of origin right the way through to the beautifully made final piece. The ability to trace your diamond back to the country or mine of origin helps to improve its authenticity and prevent the spread of conflict diamonds.

How can you trace a diamond?

A rough diamond is passed through many hands before it gets to you, which has previously made it nearly impossible to track. Over the past few years, pioneering technologies have revolutionised the natural diamond industry by making it a more transparent and verifiable process.

Instead of being written by just one person with the risk of incorrect or forged information, Blockchain technology digitally registers each movement in a diamond’s journey and cannot be changed. It also documents over 40 features, including colour, carat weight and clarity, to create a diamond's unique ID certificate and give further assurance of its quality.
