28 SEPTEMBER 2022- SCOTT GIBSON | WATCH SPECIALIST WRITER
Watch Specialist, Scott Gibson has been with Ernest Jones since June 2021. Scott has developed a passion and enthusiasm for watches across the nearly 8 years he has been working in the industry, both selling and repairing timepieces, which he is now an avid collector of. Scott has always enjoyed writing and has a master's in journalism, now he's an in-store watch specialist at Ernest Jones, Lincoln.
How Long Have You Worked In The Jewellery And Watch Industry?
Just over seven years now. I started out repairing watches of all shapes and sizes, from the simplest to some of the more complex models on the market. The technical side of timepieces that I focused on is what ignited my passion for them and now makes up a lot of my interest in any new releases. Selling them is a more recent switch when I started with Ernest Jones about a year and a half ago now. Writing about watches is still new to me, but I have had experience as a journalist before so it’s great to mix two of my passions.
What Is Your Favourite Style Of Watch?
Looking at my own collection, I try not to have a favourite. I always like to have any new addition be something a little different so I’m not doubling up on anything. However, my three most recent additions could all fall under the category of ‘exploring’ watches, watches made for the outdoors. They are all very different executions of that idea though, one is a nice clean three-handed model, another features a compass bezel to allow you to find your bearings and the other features a fixed bezel GMT, originally intended for cave explorers to easily keep track of time whilst underground. It’s not exactly a narrow taste but any mechanical watches really float my boat.
How Did You Get Into Writing About Watches?
Watches and writing are two of my passions, so combing the two made perfect sense. I had always wanted to write about watches, so when the chance to write for the Ernest Jones blog came along it was too good to pass up.
What Are Your Favourite Watch Brands?
Right now I would have to say Tudor for one. The Black Bay GMT was a watch I pursued a long time before getting one last year while the new Black Bay Pro instantly caught my eye (and my wallet). Longines too have a special place in my heart, as my first Swiss Automatic watch was a Longines Conquest Classic Chronograph which I still love to this day. I’m also a big fan of Christopher Ward, three of my watches come from them and I’m sure I will have more yet.
What Is The Most Interesting Thing You Have Learned About Watches Since Writing For Our Watch Blog?
How easy it is to execute the same ideas so differently. If you just describe the spec sheet for say an OMEGA Seamaster and a TAG Heuer Aquaracer they sound very similar, but look at them in real life and they are very different watches. Variety is the spice of life, and there is so much of that in the watch industry.
If You Could Only Wear One Watch For The Rest Of Your Life, What Would You Choose?
This is maybe the hardest question I’ve ever had to answer. If I had to pick just one though, of my current collection I’d go for my Black Bay GMT. I spent so long chasing after it, nearly three years, that it really does hold a special place in the collection. It is also an absolutely stunning watch and it never fails to put a smile on my face when I glance down to see the time. I would feel very lost without my other watches though.
